![]() ![]() It was really expensive and we began looking for other suppliers for the LS chain. In late 1999 (as I recall) GM recommended this chain to us for SCCA racing in the LS1 engines. I know that Cloyes also offered a premium timing set for the LS1/LS6 with a very expensive chain and I believe this chain was produced in France (Renold Manufacturing). I believe this chain is supplied from Cloyes and I think they have the chain made by Rolon. GM installs the same chain in the L59, L76, L92, L9H, LC9, LH6, LH8, LM7, LMF, LMG, LQ4, LQ9, LS1, LS2, LS3, LS4, LS6, LS7, LS9, LSA, LY2, LY5, LY6, and SR4. So YES, these are performance aftermarket Iwis chains and we have been selling Iwis chains before the LS engine was born.Īlso, to clear up the reference on the GM LS2 and LS7 chains being different - they ARE NOT different. We have numerous engine builders that use nothing but this chain because of its fit, function, price and durability. It has been at least 8 years since I have seen the numbers but we did have the tensile strength and various other technical information relating this to the stock GM chain. They are now warehoused here in the USA and we no longer have to wait for Customs clearance! And we are grateful for that! And until recently all of these orders came thru US Customs before they arrived here at SDPC. The SDPC Iwis chains come thru our supplier, they are in the Iwis box, they are made in Germany, and we order them by part number. I am certain they are probably the largest supplier for automotive timing chains in the world. Iwis is a huge manufacturing company and is one of the major suppliers in the world for chains of all types. We found the premium German made Iwis chains were second to none in quality and value. Our quest for a premium timing chain began when we were looking for a less expensive alternative to using the Jesel belt drive that would live under the high horsepower conditions of our drag race big blocks Chevrolet engines. We have been buying and selling Iwis chains for a minimum of 15-years. The older style thinner stock LS1 chain on the right.Īnother good post from scoggin-dickey on the chains. The LS2/LS3 chain looks identical to the KaTech chain (middle). Like I said, harmonics are what kill chains. You can see how the invidividual chain links are physically beefier, but since they are almost never the point of failure, that is irrelevant. Below is a comparison of my original 2002 LS1 chain, the Katech chain and the IRL chain. Anyhow, the IRL chain was made by Renold (no longer available) and was hand assembled, blue printed and shot peened. I also had on hand a new Katech chain that I was going to use but I needed an adjustable timing set so someone got a screaming deal on a new Katech chain. I just installed the Cloyes 9-3153AL with the IRL timing chain when I did my swap last month to an AFR 6016 cam and AFR 205 heads. įor your information the G68V-2 is the series chain for the BMW M V10-Engine and its appropriate for high numbers of revolutions." "The rooler chain G68V-2 is one of our best 3/8" roller chains. Here is part of an e-mail I received from Michael Weikert of iwis motorsysteme GmbH & Co., Muenchen,Germany: The Katech chain is one of the best ones that JWIS makes. Bottom line, JWIS does not necessarily mean its better than the rest as it depends on which one you have. There are several JWIS chains available in the correct 3/8 pitch for our cars, each of varying strength and quality. Winklhofer & Sohne” – I got this from the Iwis guys back when Cloyes and Iwis had a joint venture, anyway)" "I notice you used JWIS, which is actually more correct, but years back so many people mistook the J, thinking it was an “I” that they adopted the tradename IWIS, the JWIS logo stands for “Joh. To clear up the IWIS/JWIS, here are the facts (per Jim Hamilton at Cloyes):
